Senate Special Committee on Aging Examines the Challenges with Assisted Living Facilities

On January 25, 2024, the Senate Special Committee on Aging held a hearing to examine challenges seniors and assisted living facilities experience in caregiving.  The Committee discussed issues around workforce, safety, and private equity ownership in assisted living facilities.

House of Representatives Passes a Continuing Resolution to Fund Health Care Programs Through Beginning of March 2024

On January 18, 2024, the House passed a continuing resolution to fund the government until March.   In addition to keeping HHS and the FDA operating, it also extends certain bipartisan legislative priorities like Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payments and rural physician payments.   

CMS Releases Final Rule on Health Plan Prior Authorization and Interoperability

On January 17, 2024, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a final rule on prior authorization (PA) and interoperability.  The rule sets new deadlines for plans to respond to prior authorization requests and allows beneficiaries to have more transparency into any PA decisions.

House Committee on Education and the Workforce Examines the Quality and Affordability of Employer-Sponsored Health Care

On January 11, 2024, the Committee on Education and the Workforce held a hearing on lowering costs of and increasing access to employer-sponsored health plans. There were bipartisan calls for increasing transparency in health care data and pricing, and a robust discussion around the rising costs of employer-sponsored insurance due to consolidation and anti-competition in health care
